Germany’s rail operator Deutsche Bahn was hit by a large-scale DDoS attack that disrupted information and booking systems for several hours. The cyberattack affected IT operations, causing delays and service interruptions. At this time, the rail giant fully recovered its operations.
“There may currently be disruptions to the information and booking systems of Deutsche Bahn. Our IT experts are already working on analyzing the cause and resolving the issue.” read an update published by the company on its status page. The information and booking systems of Deutsche Bahn have been largely stable again since the evening.
The DDoS attack on German rail operator started on February 17 and extended into February 18. The DDoS shut down the company’s IT systems, bahn.de and DB Navigator.
It’s unclear who is behind the attack and what their motivation. In past years, European critical infrastructure and government organizations were targeted with DDoS attack powered by pro-Russian hacktivists like Killnet and NoName057(16).
