Delta Dental of Virginia suffered a data breach that exposed personal and health data of about 146,000 customers after the hack of an email account.
A security breach at the dental care provider Delta Dental of Virginia (DDVA) exposed data of about 146,000 people, including names, Social Security numbers, ID numbers, and health information, after an email account was compromised.
Delta Dental of Virginia is a dental benefits provider offering insurance plans to individuals, families, and employers across the state. It manages oral health programs, processes claims, and partners with dentists statewide. The organization also supports community oral-health initiatives through its foundation.
DDVA detected suspicious activity in one email account on April 23, 2025 and launched an investigation with the help of external experts. Collected evidence showed that emails and attachments may have been accessed between March 21 and April 23, potentially exposing personal data. A review confirmed that some individuals’ information (names, SSNs, government ID numbers, and protected health data) were exposed.
“On or around April 23, 2025, DDVA discovered suspicious activity associated with one email account and immediately initiated an investigation of the matter. DDVA engaged independent cybersecurity experts to assist with the process.” reads the data breach notification shared with the Maine Attorney General. “As a result of the investigation, DDVA determined that certain emails and attachments may have been accessed and acquired without authorization between March 21, 2025 and April 23, 2025.”
DDVA pointed out that it has no evidence of misuse.
Delta Dental of Virginia is providing 12 months with free identity protection and credit monitoring to anyone whose Social Security or driver’s license data was exposed.
