Blue Cross of Idaho announced to have suffered a data breach, hackers accessed to the personal information of about 5,600 customers.

Blue Cross of Idaho announced suffered a data breach that might have exposed the personal information of about 5,600 customers (out of a grand total of 560,000 health insurance customers), including their names,
subscriber or enrollee numbers, dates of service, provider names, patient account numbers, claims number and payment data, and procedure codes

According to officials, the portal of Blue Cross of Idaho was breached on March 21 in an attempt to fraudulently reroute financial transactions made by providers. The attackers were locked out and the portal was secured on March 22.

Blue Cross of Idaho confirmed that exposed data did not include Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, banking or credit card numbers or information about medical diagnoses.

The company reported the incident to the FBI and launched an internal investigation to determine the extent of the hack.

The company notified all affected members and offered them three years of complementary credit monitoring and identity protection services.

“We take consumers’ privacy very seriously, and we are committed to keeping our members’ data secure,” said Blue Cross of Idaho Executive Vice President Paul Zurlo.

“We have not identified any unauthorized use of personal data and will keep close watch for illegitimate activity,”

The company is asking members to review their health benefits statements and contact Blue Cross for any anomy they will detect.
